Retail forex broker deposits in the United States showed signs of life recently, snapping a prolonged three-month slide before stalling near the $470 million mark. According to the latest figures released by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the six registered retail foreign exchange dealers in the country ended August with a combined $469.96 million owed to retail clients.
The modest recovery began in July, when customer deposits grew by $9.27 million, representing a 2.01% increase that brought the total pool to $471.58 million. This positive momentum followed a particularly weak June, which had seen total deposits drop to $462.31 million, marking the lowest level recorded since late 2023.
However, the reprieve was short-lived as August figures retracted slightly. The month-over-month decline saw $1.61 million, or roughly 0.34%, shaved off the total pool, demonstrating that broader retail participation remains hesitant and cautious in the current market environment.
When viewed on an annual basis, the recent uptick has done little to close the gap with historical figures. The August 2026 total sits 7.23% lower than the $506.58 million registered in the same month of the previous year, highlighting the deepest annual shortfall observed since March.
Market observers note that tighter regulations and shifting trading preferences continue to shape the US retail forex landscape. With fewer registered brokers operating domestically compared to previous decades, capital concentration and overall deposit volumes remain tightly bound to macroeconomic conditions and prevailing retail interest.
