UK Financial Conduct Authority Warns CFD Brokers Over Excessive Overnight Fees

The UK Financial Conduct Authority has issued a stark warning to retail CFD providers regarding the transparency and fairness of their overnight holding costs. Regulators highlight that many brokers continue to charge excessive overnight fees without offering clear, understandable explanations to retail clients.

Furthermore, the watchdog raised serious concerns regarding how providers assess charges on hedged or matched positions. Specifically, holding simultaneous buy and sell CFDs on the exact same underlying asset has drawn intense regulatory scrutiny over whether these added costs represent fair value.

These disclosures stem from a targeted follow-up survey conducted by the FCA in May 2026. The regulatory body examined 81 firms to evaluate how effectively the industry responded to initial warnings regarding consumer duty obligations and hidden charges.

Alarmingly, the findings indicate that while many firms claim to have upcoming adjustments planned, a mere 12% of surveyed brokers have actually modified their pricing structures. This widespread sluggishness has drawn criticism from officials monitoring retail consumer protection standards.

The regulatory pressure places retail brokers under intense observation to justify their fee schedules. Firms failing to demonstrate genuine compliance with fair value guidelines face potential enforcement actions and heightened regulatory penalties.

Traders are advised to review their broker fee disclosures carefully, particularly regarding overnight holding costs and hedged margin accounts. As oversight tightens, transparency across the retail trading sector is expected to improve significantly over the coming months.
